New Tidbits continued: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Vitamin D, Wireless device, Eye Candy

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

While studies continue on the amount of Vitamin D we need, one thing is for certain; we don’t get enough. The best way to absorb Vitamin D is through sun exposure, but there’s the risk of sun damage and skin cancer. Slathering on the suntan lotion limits what we absorb from the sun and northern climate people really lack the needed amount of D for bone health, colon cancer prevention, protecting the immune system, heart disease and mental health. 1,200 – 2,000 iu of Vitamin D3 supplement should boost you to where you want to be. Most people take D with toast, coffee and juice in the morning. TAKE NOTE: Vitamin D is best absorbed by taking your pill with your biggest meal of the day.  Vitamin D is fat soluble, and absorption increases by 50% when taking it with your largest meal, which should include some fat.

If you have a Verizon wireless device for your laptop, be sure to unplug the device when you are “off” your computer. I was under the impression my time would stop accumulating when I “disconnected.” It was an expensive lesson when I received my bill after I had visited Canada. My roaming kept accumulating, even after I “disconnected” as processes continued because the device was still plugged in my computer. OUCH!  A lesson learned the hard way …….

We are bombarded with super and Victoria Secret models, actresses who never seem to age, catalogs without a single “normal-size” person to be found. So I was thrilled with a little “eye-candy” for “the girls” with Daniel Craig as the new James Bond. His first movie was terrific; the second okay but still an opportunity to eyeball the edgy super-hunk. I was totally bummed when discovering MGM’s financial woes brought Craig’s third Bond movie to a halt. There’s talk Bollywood will bail out MGM, but I think it will be quite a while before we see Craig in 007 mode! Boo!

Last Spring, I heard “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” on the premium cable channel Starz, was the show to watch. While ordering my channels, I included Starz to see what the talk was about. Well the series lived up to the hype and Andy Whitfield, who played Spartacus, is a great actor and nice to watch for many reasons. Latest has the second season shooting postponed as Andy Whitfield is being treated for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I was shocked to hear of his challenges.  Prayers to Andy and his family during this difficult time. Gals, hold on to your seats while we wait for our guy to return to a healthy life and “Spartacus!”

Whew…had to get that off my chest!

News Tidbits: Pottery Barn, Cambria Cove, “eat, pray, love” at Best Buy

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

Fashion, fashion, fashion! This is an exciting time of year! Beautiful colors and textures: we are bombarded with magazines, catalogs and Fashion Week. While I look forward to this time, we’re going to take a little break.

My office/spare bedroom is decorated with black and white photos. I needed something else for my walls that would provide utility and a different dimension. I found the perfect item, Pottery Barn’s “Daily System.”

image

With the Daily System, you choose the length of the top rod and the components that work for you. I ordered the 24 inch top rod and the corkboard and letter bin (the two left-hand components shown above).  It comes in three finishes and I am very happy with this purchase!

For those who take yoga, it can be a problem lugging your yoga mat around. I also have a topper for my mat so it gets cumbersome. I found the perfect solution in Cambria Cove’s catalog: “Black & White Yoga & Pilates Bag by Kim Michie.”

image

While it says black and white, it’s really black with camel flowers. This bag is beautiful! It is very well made; sturdy material with a lot of texture. At first I wasn’t sure about the $88 price tag, but it is money well spent. It will contain my mat, topper, water, wallet, keys. Other colors available. This is a great piece you won’t regret purchasing. (If you take yoga or Pilates!)

I saw the movie “eat, pray, love.” It was okay but I hadn’t read the book and was bombarded with readers who thought the book superior (usually goes one way or the other!) Anyway, I enjoyed the music and bought the soundtrack at Best Buy. The artists include Neil Young and Eddy Vedder. Check it out; it’s really a nice CD and very easy listening – pleasant! If you didn’t like the book or movie, you may enjoy the music!

Fashion On A Budget: Nordstrom Triple Points Sept 22-26 ! Echo, Via Spiga, Kate Spade, DKNY, Steven Dweck, Lauren by Ralph Lauren, AK Anne Klein

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

The seasons are changing; the weather demands we change our wardrobe habits and embrace the winter season by forcing us to face our “closets.”  Fashion Week and new merchandise bring a chance to make fun choices within our budgets. I’m big on taking advantage of the sales and award points that have a “return” value so September 22-26 is a prime time to consider your options. Here’s a few things I like from the Nordstrom September 2010 catalog. Remember, Triple Award Points if you use your Nordstrom card!

image image DKNY Hosiery; Opaque Tights

It’s like new paint on a house; how to change it up with color and inexpensively. Big bang for your buck! Always love the boot option with tights as well.

image Echo Sequin Neck Wrap. The sequins and INK color gives this a high rating for versatility (wear with “dress up” or casual). I hope this item doesn’t sell out too fast!

image image Via Spiga Ethos Ankle Bootie. Last year as I wearily put away my short black boots, I decided I would need to buy new boots for the next season. Via Spiga offers a great pair for replacements without breaking the bank! These are smart looking and I’ll get a lot of wear with different outfits. Thumbs up on this pair!

image Kate Spade ‘idiom’ Wide Enamel Bangle. Good looking and great with “all the black” we wear!

image Stephen Dweck Faceted Smoky Quartz Oval Ring. image

This ‘statement’ ring complements so many colors; black, brown, purple, grey, camel, red.

image Lauren by Ralph Lauren Toggle Closure Suede Belt.  Definitely-  in Regal Purple!

image AK Anne Klein Croc-embossed Leather Strap Watch. RED is everywhere! If you can’t invest in lots of RED or red just isn’t your best color, you can still feel elegantly “with it” wearing this Anne Klein watch.

J. Crew. See outfits at 900 N. Michigan Ave./Chicago location

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

I always have to stop in at J. Crew. They are outstanding at layering and accessorizing.  The cardigans, belts, necklaces – wonderful and fun. Here’s a look at what they are offering at their Michigan Avenue store.

Sweet layering

Above you have the “flannel” shirt shown with a skirt and tie and also as a “belt” on the outfit on the right. The fur-collared jacket is great with the dress above or the “flannel” shirt and pants shown below.

Glittering up casual

Bloomingdales , 900 N. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, was buzzing with excitement as customers shopped for their fall wardrobes. Military and casual looks are paired with sparkle to bring up the bar on your everyday wear. Change your shoes and jewelry to easily take you from afternoon errands to fun nights on the town. Here’s a cute camouflage dress and outfit from Michael Kors I thought were great!

 Glitter, military & rouching

INC International Concepts is another of my favorite lines to freshen up your wardrobe at great prices. I find their styles fresh, fun and great fitting on many figure types. Here again we see military looks and colors along with glitter that adds fun to your look.

Easy to wear styles

Here’s Karen Kane outfits with leggings. These bring to mind great travel options.  Airplane travelers take note: these pack easily, are comfortable and stylish, will keep you warm with jackets, and look good with flats or boots.
