Don’t dash the puddles. Johan Ringdal’s SWIMS: Galoshes that make a statement

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Girls miss wearing pretty sandals or heels in inclement weather but who wants to ruin a fine pair of shoes or freeze their ‘tootsies’ off? So why would men expose fine footwear to rain, slush, snow and salt? Evidently, galoshes were all the rage in the 30’s but started dying out in the 80’s, when shoe styles were changing and galoshes became difficult to put over shoes.

A 31 year-old Norwegian man, Johan Ringdal, decided it was time to bring the galosh back while he was studying art in New York city. He founded  SWIMS, a Scandinavian-based shoe line to protect footwear. These galoshes are easy to wear with a lining that shines your shoes while you walk, helps keep the feet warm and dry, and they’re good looking!

CLINIQUE gets to the bottom of it!

Monday, April 11th, 2011

Yes, you should apply mascara to your bottom lashes but is it possible without smudging? With lots of experience (but usually in a hurry) the bottom lash line usually needed a bit of cleanup, until now.

I ordered the new Clinique bottom lash mascara and it arrived today. The brush is tiny and the perfect size to apply mascara to the bottom lashes. Goes on easily, no smudges! It’s available in black/brown or black.  Even though I use black on the top lashes, I prefer the black/brown for the bottom lashes to minimize those pesky dark circles I try so hard to conceal!

Thumbs UP Clinique!

John Updike

“The thing about her is, she’s good-natured. He knew it the second he saw her standing by the parking meters. He could just tell from the soft way her belly looked. With women, you keep bumping against them, because they want different things, they’re a different race. Either they give, like a plant, or scrape, like a stone. In all the green world nothing feels as good as a woman’s good nature.”

Tim Gunn- author, Cohost of Emmy-winning reality show Project Runway

Monday, February 14th, 2011

I like this guy! I’ve kind of been following him, in obscure ways, and after reading his new release “Gunn’s Golden Rules/Life’s Little Lessons for Making It Work,” it’s all come together.

Tim was born on July 29, 1953 in Washington, DC. His father George William Gunn, was an FBI agent during the FBI’s Director J. Edgar Hoover  administration. As you can almost tell by Tim’s athletic build, Tim was a champion swimmer throughout high school. He later attended the Corcoran College of Art and Design.

In 1982, Gunn starting working in New York City at Parsons The New School for Design to leave as Chair of the Department of Fashion Design in 2007. Tim joined Liz Claiborne as the company’s Chief’s Creative Officer. He began appearing on Project Runway during its first season in 2004.  Tim, as television personality, has also appeared on talk shows and at other events.

If you get a chance, read Tim’s newest book “Gunn’s Golden Rules.” It’s delightful and witty and fun! His charm exudes through his shy personality, and I agree with a lot of his philosophy on life. It is a quick read that I had a hard time putting down because it’s very entertaining! Thumbs up!

The New York Times, ‘Jeopardy!’ and IBM. What does that have to do with style? And……. what is Watson?

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Is this an anomaly? There’s so much to talk about here, I hardly know where to start.

Richard Power’s Sunday Opinion “What is Artificial Intelligence?” in The New York Times, talks about IBM’s system named WATSON (remember 2001’s Space Odyssey’s HAL?).  Watson will play “Jeopardy!” matches against the show’s top two players on February 14,15 & 16th. WATSON, the 4 year-old start up the size of a small R.V., has digested 200 million pages of data, to compete against Ken Jennings, who holds the longest unbroken “Jeopardy!” winning streak, and the undefeated champion and biggest money winner, Brad Rutter.

While this is fascinating and will be super exciting to watch (adding a new dimension to Valentine’s Day activities), it brings to mind the age-old question of whether computers will ever be totally capable of replacing humans?  Will a WATSON ever have style?

Click WATSON for video. Gray &  black neutrals with silver bling….I kinda like this!

This makes for interesting water-cooler conversation and awesome television viewing.

Who will YOU vote for?

New drama on USA network-FAIRLY LEGAL starring Sarah Shahi and Michael Trucco. Entertaining and great style!

Monday, February 7th, 2011

The pilot of this new drama was exhausting as I watched Sarah Shahi (as litigator-turned-mediator Kate Reed) race through San Francisco in her Louboutin’s,  ALL day AND night. But after that initial thought, I enjoyed the entertainment of this flirty light drama. They’ve hit on several aspects, like daughter vs. young evil stepmother, Kate mourning the recent death of her father, Kate’s “ex-husband with benefits” relationship, her fun banter with her assistant, and the cute man on the boat neighbor potential relationship. While these elements lend to an interesting story, it would be hard to miss Kate and her step-mom’s sense of style. We’re almost bordering on “Sex and The City” fashion eye candy!

gLITZ gLAMOUR at the 2011 Golden Globes-Hooray Hollywood !!

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

While the jury is still out on host Ricky Gervais (come on -he’s a British comedian!), I think we can agree that LA has found the Fountain of Youth. Hello Hollywood! It was a delight for sore eyes and  refreshing from years of broadcast bad news that last Sunday we could revel in the magical sights of “the good life.” Ladies were gorgeous and gents handsome.  Designers’ works haven’t looked this good on such happy faces for several years. Works of art indeed on fabric and skin: it’s like going to a museum!

While commentators have their follow-up shows and opinions (she looked gorgeous, that stylist should be fired, the hair didn’t fit the outfit), overall, The Golden Globes brought us back to what once was the “good ‘ole days” of Hollywood. With somber mood of war, natural disasters, hunger, bailouts and economy, the Hollywood genre tends to respectfully follow suit. But enough is enough already! It appears they’ve pulled out all stops and are going forward with “my glass is half full, not half empty” optimism to give people something to talk and feel good about. What’s there not to like here? Eye candy. Free entertainment. More fun than watching a NFL football game…..well except for next Sunday’s NFC championship conference….ironic:  here I am, Milwaukee born, raised- and in my blood….Lambeau Field I luv u Packer Fan , I just spent two days in Chicago….(what was I thinking?).. Enemy Territory !! Yikes!

Hey…Da Bear’s fans are afraid of our superior Green Bay Packer quarterback #12 Aaron Rogers, just as we dislike Bear’s defense.  Ahem….. ah…yes moving on…..

Back to Golden Globes…

I don’t care what some people say; Halle Berry is a gorgeous woman! Geez Louise already!  Her Nina Ricci dress only accentuates her good genes and hard work. There are very few women..ON THIS PLANET.. who can wear that SO  successfully.  Dear Lord, is she a perfect specimen or what?  I want her body!  I mean, I want to have her body as my body…..wow…that would be thousands of hours at the gym for me and still no guarantee!

Natalie Portman (2011 Golden Globe Award winner; Best Actress for Black Swan) shined in award energy AND her new loveR future Hubby, AND baby on the way! An Israel-American, Harvard graduate familiar with 4 languages, she has an impressive  award winner war chest (u go girl!).  I watched her disciplined  ballet dancing in Black Swan, intense, but her 2011 Viktor & Rolf Golden Globe dress was perfect in reflecting the soft and human side of Natalie’s life. Good for you Natalie;  I’m a big fan of hers with  the 2004 Mike Nichols’ movie “Closer,” and I’m anxious to see her with hunky Ashton Kutcher in No Strings Attached.”  Meow………Smile

During the show and Red Carpet, we watched the stunning ‘women in black’ and of course, the wonderful blush tones (for the beauties who can wear it but few and far between). Jennifer Lopez seems to grow more beautiful every year, and this year’s dress was perfect for her and her bodyshape. I really liked January Jones’ (Mad Men)  red number and kudos to her; she can pull it off!  I’m envious, ……..

Ryan Seacrest – I’m glad  you’ve found time for a personal life, and nice to see your girlfriend!  There has to be balance in life :  Go for it! You’re  a smart, sexy devil…. (I have a Seacrest Crush; try to say that 10 times!)

The best  color on the Red Carpet? GREEN, GREEN, GREEN! Catherine Zeta-Jones (weren’t we glad to see and hear Michael Douglas?), Angelina Jolie, Mila Kunis (70’s show, voice of Meg Griffin on Family Guy, Black Swan), Elisabeth Moss of Mad Men to name a few. I love color and admire women who can wear and,   pull it off!

One of my favoritesAnne Hathaway is blessed with beauty and brains and I think we’ll be seeing very much more of her in the future. Talent, beauty, smarts.  I’m a fan !

Best Accessory:  Baby bump.

Favorite Hollywood couple:  Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. She was Gorgeous in Green and Brad was.. well…you know, Brad.   ah……
